Deem Forum Two: Rest, Respect, Reciprocity

—Words by TBD

For Deem’s second series of forum discussions—a virtual space for us to reflect and expand on the perspectives and conversations presented in print—we focused on three themes that emerged through our second issue: rest, respect, and reciprocity.

We hosted three live online sessions on May 20, and June 3, and June 10, in which Issue Two contributors were joined by guests and members of our editorial team. Some text here on the opening paragraph, etc. Placeholder text: Rooted in the heart of a historically Black New York neighborhood, the group has made its home in the Brownsville Heritage House. Every Saturday, writers from all walks of Black Brooklyn life cram around a long table for a few hours, fueled by donuts and coffee.

Session One participants (clockwise from top left): Kamra, Antonia Estela Pérez Rojas, and Jessica Lynne.

Placeholder text: Some text here to briefly describe Deem Forum Session One: Rest theme, participants. Can simply say sth like, Session One: Rest is a conversation around prioritizing, envisioning, and designing restorative rituals, etc. etc.

Maybe we can also have some text here that recaps some points made by the participants (Not sure about length) Putting down some placeholder text here for now.

“There’s a concept in Indian cosmology and philosophy of I need, which is essentially mutual aid of you help me, I help you, or like a concept of a work party. We’ll all be able to get this done so much more joyfully and efficiently if we supported each other.”

“I’m noticing that me having all my needs met and caring for myself is translating into me being the healthiest best lover I can be to all of my beloveds and comrades.”

Placeholder text: Some text here to briefly describe Deem Forum Session Two: Respect theme, participants. Can simply say sth like, Session Three: Reciprocity is a conversation around defining, expressing and designing for respect, etc. etc. etc. Maybe we can also have some text here that recaps some points made by the participants (Not sure about length) Putting down some placeholder text here for now.

Session Two participants: Ramon Tejada, Dori Tunstall, Nu Goteh

“Empathy is just the site of disconnection, and the positive side of it is that it’s a recognition that I actually need to connect. But again, that recognition just shows the gap in your understanding and your positionality and relationship to whom you’re supposed to be designing with. But it’s not it. I mean I would say, the alternative is worse, but it needs to be evolved.”

Placeholder text: Some text here to briefly describe Deem Forum Session Three: Reciprocity theme, participants. Can simply say sth like, Session Three: Reciprocity is a conversation around the significance and practice of reciprocity within design and architecture. etc, etc.

Session three participants Felema Yemaneberhan, Germane Barnes, Justin Garrett Moore, Joseph Zeal Henry

Text here to maybe highlight some of Felema’s questions, or to recap any interesting points made by participants? Putting down some placeholder text here for now.

Text here to conclude this article. Following is Placeholder text: Throughout 2018, BlackSpace employed several methods of collecting and recording Brownsville histories. Members even took to the streets to interview residents. The lessons learned lead BlackSpace to create the Co-Designing Black Neighborhood Heritage Conservation playbook.

End with Thank you to everyone who participated and watched our live discussions. Full discussions with closed captioning are available to watch on Youtube, etc. etc.
